Today's Thoughts 5/10/11 Fickle Fate Just have to love it. You know. That part of life that just as you get to a really, really good spot in life. Things really start going your way. Then fate comes along and kicks you right in the groin. Thats been my luck here lately. About six weeks ago, just as freight started picking up for me; my truck busted the front cover and I needed to replace it along with my bull gear while I was at it. Fifty five hundred in repairs. Not so bad for an engine with one point three millions miles on it.
At least the freight has remained decent and I just about had that paid off and what happens? Two, not one; but two spindles on my trailer start slinging oil. CRAP. Another three grand in repairs. Figure might as well do a complete brake job while I'm at it. I'm thinking that maybe my old truck is just getting two old and it might be time to replace her. All good things must come to an end I guess.
But why do I even have to replace the spindles. The trailer I bought back in 2000. So it has over a million miles on it.... but thinking back about it ... remembering all those installed wheel seals that kept blowing on me over the years.... Lock Nuts backing off and the wheels wobbling down the road until I finally found someone that knew how to install them properly...... I wish I could prove this and let them pay for the replacement. I tell that story in my book "Running Legal Blues" but the point is, I'm still paying for the mistakes of those expert mechanics that did not know how to properly install a wheel seal I think. If my guess is right, I'll be replacing one more spindle in the near future.
Oh well. Such is life in a big truck. The money has been a little better this year and if fate holds out in a good way, I'll survive once again. This country was built on people that took the hard times in stride and did what needed to be done to survive. I like a good challenge. This is just another bump in the road for me. It sure would be nice though if that old fickle fate would allow me a chance to breathe before it went to kicking me again.
